Calisthenics

Introduction

What Is Calisthenics?

Calisthenics, also known as bodyweight training, serves many purposes. While it is a great introduction for beginner level people to begin their training journey, it’s also an excellent way to introduce high level skills to demanding loads. Progression can generally be taken in two pathways: resistance or skill, and every move stems from the basics.

Additional Information

Take the pushup, for example. The move has fairly little in the way of prerequisites: a plank hold, and the ability to push about 65-70% of your body weight. If you find it becomes a relatively easy movement to perform, then you can introduce a mechanical disadvantage by bringing your hands closer to your hips, forcing you to lift closer to 80-90% of your body weight. Now add the challenge of balance into the exercise by making it a handstand pushup. You are now not only lifting your entire body weight, but being greatly disadvantaged by the stabiliser muscles working to hold you up as you attempt to perform the movement. This principle of taking basic exercises and introducing specific demands to it can keep your training fresh and interesting. The only limit is your creativity.
